De nacht is gevallen in de musea van het Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. De gidsen zijn naar huis, de lichten zijn gedoofd en de schoolkinderen liggen veilig in hun bedjes. Maar er broeit iets ongelooflijks. Voormalig nachtbewaker Larry komt voor een hevige strijd te staan. Hij moet proberen zijn ooit onbeweeglijke vrienden te redden van de ondergang. Alles, van de beroemde schilderijen aan de muren tot de ruimteschepen in de hallen, komt opeens tot leven.
